For many people, crooked and crowded teeth hinder the health and appearance of the smile. To improve alignment, you may require orthodontic care. Unfortunately, many people avoid orthodontic treatment because they believe metal braces are the only option for smile correction. Santa Monica Orthodontist Paul Austin offers patients a comfortable and esthetically pleasing alternative to traditional braces.

People prefer Invisalign over traditional metal orthodontics for a number of reasons.

First, the aligners are inconspicuous, unlike the metal brackets and arch wires of traditional orthodontics. Invisalign aligners can be removed before meals, so you can eat without the fear of breaking your appliance. Additionally, it is less time consuming to care for your teeth, and you don’t have the concern of food particles being stuck in your appliances. Finally, patients wearing Invisalign report a reduction in the discomfort often associated with metal braces.

The Invisalign Process for a Beautiful Smile

The first step is to come in and see Dr. Austin for a consultation. After a complete evaluation, he will determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign and recommend records. Dr. Austin will take a digital impression of your teeth, along with photographs and x-rays. Using these materials and the Invisalign software, he will create a three dimensional “Clin-Check” that will allow Dr. Austin to craft a custom treatment plan and visualize each aligner specific for your case. When Dr. Austin is satisfied with Clin-Check, he will approve the aligners to be made. Due to our digital capabilities, you should expect your aligners within 2-3 weeks after your records have been taken.
After receiving your aligners, which will be made using clear, BPA-free plastic, Dr. Austin will tell you how often to wear them. On average, each aligner has .25 mm of correction and Dr. Austin recommends that each aligner be worn 22 hours per day for 2 weeks. In most cases, Dr. Austin will provide you with 4 aligners at a time so that your appointments are scheduled every 8 weeks to track your progress. The number of aligners is dependent on the complexity of the case. At the completion of your scheduled aligners, Dr. Austin will evaluate your results to determine if additional aligners are required to complete the treatment goals. This process is known as Refinement, and there is no additional fee.
